In my opinion Use Cases are the basis upon which requirements engineering should be undertaken. How they are captured is a story for another day, though during the last few years and in particular with respect to the design projects undertaken with architects and designers as end users, I have had the opportunity to develop a number of bespoke systems for recording requirements. Horses for courses and all that.

The MAXIMUS project for example, had a unique set of requirements – both functional and non functional. These, in turn, were subject to qualitative and quantitative assessment within an environment which was particularly creative in nature – the Giugiaro design studio. I needed to develop a method of recording the designers requirements, alongside a visual representation of the proposed functionality. An example of one of the resulting ‘rich use cases’ is shown below.
