CINeSPACE

CINeSPACE, like IMPROVE was a project funded by the FP6 Programme and was also associated with the Information Society Technologies (IST) theme. The mandate was to:

Design and implementation a mobile rich media collaborative information exchange platform, scalable , accessible through a wide variety of networks, and therefore, interoperable and Location-Based for the promotion of Film heritage, going beyond the current state of the art.

So… a lot of things going on in there, and that was the slide in the PowerPoint presentation that used to trigger more furrowed brows than any other. Not surprising really. In simple terms, the system allowed citizens from the ‘flim rich’ cities of Glasgow, San Sebastian and Venice (yes, the business trips were great), to walk around a city with a handheld device which could be used to view culturally relevant film clips from the position from which they were filmed. Glasgow has a huge film archive, biggest in Europe I think. In theory, CINeSPACE would allow users to stand at a particular point in George Square and use the device to watch footage taken in 1917 of the Black Watch marching to war.
